Going back to Florence

firenze2

Our WHAIWHAI reprint presentation was put on hold. But now the time has come to complete the circle of our four beloved cities. On Friday, January 22nd at 6:15pm, we will be at the Feltrinelli International bookstore in Florence to once again meet Luciano Artusi, author of the 2054: Florence stories, and celebrate with a team challenge round the city.  As usual, following the presentation we will split up into teams and let the games begin. Each team needs nothing more than a WHAIWHAI guidebook and a mobile phone. The challenge will last about two hours and, as always, the team that finishes first will win a fabulous prize. Once the game is over, at a splendid spot we can’t tell you about yet (because you see, that would be like revealing the secret formula!), we’ll all get together for a toast.

That’s all until Friday in Florence. If you wish, you can let us know you’ll be there by going to our Facebook page for this event or by writing to info@whaiwhai.com. Hope to see you there!

THREE CITIES FOR WHAIWHAI

img_0098

In February 2008, the first unconventional guide called WHAIWHAI was released for the city of Venice. This jumbled guidebook, combined with codes and text messages, introduced a new way to sightsee – by discovering a city’s secrets one by one. As you know, there are now four WHAIWHAI guidebooks about four beautiful Italian cities. After having received a prize from the President of Italy for best innovation in the tourist industry, we recently joined the RCS Media Group and the Marsilio publishing company. So today we are endowed with a widespread distribution network, a new graphic format and growing opportunities to develop.

For these reasons, we’ve decided to celebrate, and we’re going to do it in style. We’re planning a special simultaneous event in the three WHAIWHAI cities: on November 20th, we will officially re-release the entire collection in three bookstores. Then, as has become a tradition of ours at such events, we will kick off a challenge for teams in the streets and squares of all three WHAIWHAI cities. As usual, all you need to do is procure a guidebook (which you can buy, hot off the press, directly at the bookstore), form a team and bring your mobile telephone, which you will use to interact with the system that will handle this challenge. The experience will last about an hour and a half, leading the teams on different itineraries. The first team to complete their treasure hunt will receive a prize.

Here are the locations and times for the event. Choose where you want to play – we look forward to seeing you there.

VENICE: libreria Mondadori, San Marco 1345, 5:00pm

Meet the author of the stories: Alberto Toso Fei will be there

ROME: libreria Voltapagina, Via Piave 18, 6:30pm

VERONA: libreria Gheduzzi, Corso Sant’Anastasia 7, 6:30pm

This is one of the events in “Veneto - Spettacoli di Mistero”, the Veneto region’s mystery festival.

Meet the author of the stories: Francesco Mazzai will be there

A video report of the whaiwhai challenge that took place in Florence on April 24th is now online. The coverage is exceptionally precise and detailed thanks to the portal Intoscana’s reporters Davide and Adriana. Cover your ears towards the end of the last video, though: the answer to one of the clues slipped out! But we’ll find another enigma – Florence conceals so many of them.

2054 – The Night in Florence: Event Standings

The results are in for the game last Friday night that started, from the Edison bookstore in Florence, at 9:30, and ended (at least for Elisa’s team) the next day! These late finishers, who divorced themselves from any thought of competition, deserve special recognition for that “slowly romantic” spirit with which they approached whaiwhai. Congratulations, Donato and Elisa! All of us met back behind the Duomo, which was the last location of the challenge. Lapo and Niccolò’s team let the others in the dust, completing their itinerary at lightning speed. So congratulations to them as well, for their quickness and their knowledge of the city. Every group finished their itinerary and walked a little over four kilometers. The team that made the most mistakes made 8 of them, but nobody was perfect  :-).

You can check out pics of the evening event and teams can read the report of their game. All you need to do is insert the telephone number you played with (including the prefix 39) and the game code (EDISON). If you snapped a few photos yourself during the game, upload them on flickr and tag them whaiwhaiandme: in this way, they can be viewed in our photo section as well. Soon we’ll even have video footage of the event taken by intoscana.it.

Special thanks to Luciano and Ricciardo Artusi for their contribution and for the distinctive prize they awarded to the winning team.

2054 Florence: Notes for the event tomorrow

It’s almost time for the Florence challenge. As you know, the appointment is for tomorrow at 9:30pm at the Edison bookstore. Each team needs to bring a gamebook and a mobile phone. A map of the city and a flashlight could be helpful, too.

Registration by telephone is now officially open for this game. Here’s how you can register:

Send a text message with your name followed by the word EDISON to (+39) 3318494552. (example: Paola EDISON).
N.B. You must send this message from the phone you’re going to use during the game!

After you send the text, the system will then ask you to enter your activation number. Answer by entering the ten-digit code you’ll find at the bottom of the last page of your gamebook.

You’re all set! You’ll receive confirmation and you’ll be ready for the game. Then all that’s left to do is wait for tomorrow, come to the Edison bookstore and wait for the start message we’ll send to begin the game.

Good luck and see you tomorrow!
